cc 306, comp 224/230, or lt4 hotcam
I am trying to find the best cam for my car, 97 lt1 TA with a 6 speed, I have CAI and underdrive pulley, and a flowmaster, and 3.73's. I will get hooker longtubes before the cam. Which cam could I get the most performance out of? I have to be able to make a 4 1/2 hour trip to college and back. Should I get 1.6 RR?Thanks
Go with the 224/230. I really don't understand what's with people these days falling into this cc306/gm847 bandwagon.
The 224/230 is a nice cam and the driveability will be good. You don't need more than that on stock heads anyway.
The hotcam also makes very respectable power and the kit is even cheaper than if you went with a 224/230, so that's also something to consider. I had customers put 340+ RWHP with a hotcam and lts on an m6.

There's a happy medium between the cams that you've named. I'm about to install an XE 230/236, which is practically a CC306, just with less on the exhaust side.
The great thing about the Hot cam is that it's offered in a package with everything you'd need for install at a great price (like $480 from Cromer) The only thing that most people replace in the Hot cam package are springs, which barely handle the Hot cam itself. Along with the Hot cam is the CC305, which is a bit bigger than the Hot cam.
I'd advise NSA 1.6 rr's for practically any cam that you purchase. If you stick with the Hot cam, I'd almost advise 1.7 rr's, but that would be a tight fit considering the lift.
Good luck on your decision. Just make sure that you do plenty of homework before you decide on one cam over the other.
Almost forgot, having your heads ported to match each cam would be a great idea and it'll utilize the cam to its full potential.

I can speak for 2 of those cams
I had the HOT cam, and it was great! I had to have a torque convertor though, and a program to get the good benefits. I had the whole kit installed, springs and all. Went to the drag strip a lot, rode the car hard, never broke a spring. I didn't know how weak they were until I read about them, I was driving on egg shells, lol
I was running 7.8@86 w/ 1.6 60' times with that hot cam!
Then, I switched over to the CC306 w/ a set of LT4 Stage II GTP heads! I haven't been able to run it or dyno it yet, but I can tell you this.....HOLY COW it roxs! I LOVE THE CC306!
It is a monster, and pulls like a mad bull around 50mph! I did dyno my hot cam set up, and I got 351rwhp and 381rwtorque!
And that was w/ the cut out CLOSED. This is also an A4!
So, since it is going to be a driver, I would go w/ something milder. Yes, you can slap a CC306 in there, but you better have the right tuning, and eventually some heads. That cam really needs to breathe.
And the sound of a 306 is nuts! SO choppy. You have to love it, especially in the cold when it is first cranked.
Knowing what I know now, if I had to have my Z as a daily driver,
I would be ok to have the 306 in there, but I do think the HOT cam is much more forgiving and has better manners.
Something in the middle of the 2 would probably be good for you
Good luck!

btw did you get the tranny cooler?

I can vouch for the 224/230 and the Hotcam.
The 224/230 has wonderful driveability, and makes good power too. see sig.
My hotcam car also has ported heads, but doesn't feel near as strong as the 224/230. Reason being is that it's a 95 M6 tranny with the 93 3.23 rear. Undergeared big time. But man that **** flys up top.
Both are great cams. The 224/230 has a torque curve as flat as Calista Flockhearts chest. See sig for my dyno sheet.
Plus, drop some 1.7 rockers on either and have yourself a really nice setup. Work in progress for me.

Hot cam = high hp cam. I got lt4 setup and as u can see the diff in my hp/tq numbers.....get 224/230 much better, as i've heard a guy with the same setup and 224/230 makin 400+some change I don't exactly remember. as opposed to my numbers.
