What is a catalytic converter supposed to look like?

What is the inside of the converter supposed to look like? I took the pipe after the converter down and looked inside expecting to see a bunch of messed up garbage, but it was just a white wall with horizontal and vertical lines on it. Is this normal? I don't understand hjow exhuast is supposed to get through with a freaking wall there.

someone please help me. I've got the exhuast taken down. I was told to jam something into the converter to get the stuff out, but that thing in there is way too stiff

It should look like a honeycomb inside. If it's clogged, don't bother scraping stuff out to save it. You'll damage it and ruin it. So, either gut it, or replace it with a high-flow.

you have to bang that stuff hard. At first, it'll feel like you're trying to break through steel. I used a hammer and pipe and wacked at it for a loong time. The more you break through, the easier it gets.

How can I tell by looking if that cat is my problem. When I looked in from the *** end, it looked like nothing was wrong with it. What does it look like when its good? What about when its bad?

I'm not getting any SES light, so I don't know what the problem (bogging) could be, besides the cat.

run the car without it and see if your bogging is still there if it is it's probably not your cat or cats.

My little brother's Firebird just had it's cat replaced. Totally clogged. The car wouldn't rev past 4k because of it. Now it's a 5500+ RPM 3.8

Do you have a high RPM problem? If not, I doubt it's your cat.

I dont know how easy it is to take a cat off on a stock exhaust system. My stock cat bolts on and off the hooker catback. If you take it off and shine a light through it, u should see right through it, a very fine mesh. I would guess that a clogged cat would not look like that.

As for bogging, a lot of things can cause that. Plugs (take a few off and look at them), wires, opti, fuel pressure, the list is a lot bigger than that but these are the most common

That picture is pretty much what mine looks like. Would looking at the back of it not tell the story? Does a bad cat and good cat look the same from the back?

The only way I could tell mine was bad was the car was bogging really badly one night. I lifted the hood and my exhaust manifolds were starting to glow red. So I took the handle from my 2 1/2 ton floor jack and stuck it in the back of the cat(it was still on the car) and beat the s*it out of it. Then started the car and blew all the stuff out of it. If you don't need one for emissions I would just gut it, it's not that hard and doesn't take too much time.
