Cat or no cat?
Cat or no cat?
Living in pa I have no emissions testing. Would it be beneficial to hollow out my catalytic converter or is it just a waste of time. I have all of my exhaust off now so thats why I ask.
Doing what I like and not what I should!

Re: Cat or no cat?
Well......can't really speak for the F-bodies, but in the B-body (Impala SS) world with our dual exhaust systems......hollowing out or deleting the cats rarely lead to even a 5HP increase........UNLESS.......the cats were clogged to begin with.
So.....take it for what you feel it's worth

Re: Cat or no cat?
Pros:
Cons:
I found a middle ground, I've got flanges welded onto my CAT/Headers and also made a straight through pipe.
I can bolt either onto and the car when I want to relatively easily, and still pass emissions!
- Few more HP
- Much Louder Exhaust
- One less thing to go wrong
Cons:
- Can't pass emissions/bad for environment
- Much Louder Exhaust

- Some Exhaust odor noticeable when idling
- A permanently wrecked CAT. New ones are not cheap!

Re: Cat or no cat?
Just hollowing it out will probably hurt flow more than it helps, as the incoming exhaust expands into the hollow can, and then has to funnel into the little outlet pipe. And they sound terrible when they are just hollowed out.
In my opinion, some things are better left alone. I built my 800HP nitrous setup, and had a custom exhaust built with dual CarSound 3" cats for the street. They are flanged so they can be replaced by Borla XR1 race mufflers at the track (cats don't like 116-octane leaded fuel).
