Easier this way...

An updated version of the GM6094M Approved Engine Oils list is available in the Reference Guide section of the TechLink website. GM has recently conducted a test program to check several of the oils on the Approved Oils list for compliance with the GM6094M specification. One of the oils tested during this program, Castrol GTX, was found not to meet the GM6094M specification, and so this oil has been removed from the Approved Oils list.

Watch for further updates to the GM6094M and GM4718M Approved Products list on the GM Techlink website.

- Thanks to Matt Snider

Not that I am a fan of Castrol, but I am surprised to see a major manufacturer's product on GM's "not approved" list.

Anyone know what is on the approved list? I tried looking it up on the GM Tech site but I need a username and password. This is too bad. I've been using Castrol GTX for years now...

Here are links to their reference guides:
Approved oils:

Oil capacities:

So according to these links I've been using the wrong oil (Castrol GTX) and overfilling my motor with oil (usually use 5.0L of oil with standard size filter). Well that's good news

If you look on the link, Castrol syntec 10w30 is on the list, so apparently it's fine.

I found this link:
http://theoildrop.server101.com/foru...0&fpart=1&vc=1

It explains how the GM 6094M spec refers to oil performance at really low temperatures (way below freezing) which Castrol GTX didn't meet the standards. If you live in warm area or are like me and only drive your car summer then it's not really relevant.

I'm sure castrol GTX is a fine oil.
