Carbon build-up in TB
Carbon build-up in TB
I took off the intake elbow the other day and noticed the TB was kinda dirty with this black stuff that i think is carbon. So i got some TB cleaner and cleaned it (did the running engine thing too). Is this normal? I've got about 90K, but i did this about 50K ago.

I don't know how much build up you had, but I cam nowhere NEAR using the whole can.....all I needed was like 5-6 sprays and I was good. When you do it put a rag underneath the TB to catch any of the stuff that falls out, and also have someone hit the gas pedal and clean in there too.

Sometimes the carbon builup is from oil pulled out of the passenger side valve cover, into the line that goes to the side of the throttle body. The passage inside the TB runs under the top cover plate, to a port in front of the blades. You might want to take the top cover plate off and see if there is any oil builup in the top of the TB. Some buildup seems to be "normal".
If you have a lot of oil there, clean it out, then check the PCV valve - drivers side of the intake manifold/center - and make sure it isn't plugged.
