can carbon build up cause overheating in the engine. my coolant and water pump seem fine and my engine is not that hot but the temp almost hit redline. carbon smell and smoke is coming out of the exhaust

what can i use to get rid of the carbon?

 

I doubt your problem is carbon build up.It can cause spark knock.Hows yourr thermostat?Fans working right?System bled properly?Radiator could be plugged.I would start by checking those.
