the lock up switch manually tells the solenoid to lock the converter when you flip it, as opposed to when the car tells it to. its usually worth about a tenth of a second. you can only lock the converter at the very top of a gear or else the extra drag will bog the motor down. if you do it right however, you'll get a little extra boost as the power from the engine will be more efficiently transferred to the wheels once the converter stops slipping.
