car revs higher than it should when cruising

Okay, I have no idea why the car has been doing this. When I first start it up and drive the car I can cruise at 70 at around 2000 rpms, when the car warms up and I have been driving it for a while it will jump up to 2500 rpms at 70 mph. When I am getting up to around 70 the rpms climb normal then jump way up to 2500. Not sure why it is doing this and it is getting annoying. Anyone got any ideas?

Sounds like the converter is unlocking for some reason.

low fluid is the most likely... But.....maybe..... your line pressure needs to be raised by the PCM.

Question just curious

when i went from a 2.73 to 3.42 in my
car, and in od.

from all the calculations and sites that i went to. from
that speed at 70 the rpms should be around 2350 to 2400............

is he saying he doesn't know why there running low or high?

no, what I am saying is that the car will jump up in rpms after I have been driving for a while. When I first start the car up it will run at 70 at around or slightly below 2000 rpms.

this may sound weird but i think your tach is wrong.....

when im locked up in 4th gear at 70 mph im doing 2400ish RPM.

i dont know how you're reading 2000 but the motor has to be spinning faster than that.

acually I have the factory tach and an autometer tach hooked up so I doubt they are both wrong . But I have not replaced the speedometer drive gear yet. But that is irrelevant because the rpms shouldnt jump up, they should be consistant.

o ok i see, the reading itself is off because of the lack of speedo correction...in that case i would check out the torque converter lock up solenoid.

ok...when you reach cruising speed, the torque converter engages a clutch that LOCKS the transmission to the engine without any slipping (like a stick car, it's ok to have a solid connection between the motor and driveline since the car is in motion and therefore wont stall). This is meant to reduce the RPM at cruise and improve gas mileage. this process is triggered by one specific solenoid in the transmission. Unfortunately, im not sure exactly which solenoid it is (i've only seen the guts of our trannies about 3 times).

can someone help out here??? (if not try doing a search or put up another post about the solenoid). sorry i couldnt help more. good luck.

they make a manual lock-up switch for them as well.

how does the lock up switch work and does that improve performance very much?
