Car randomly shuts off... bad ignition switch?
Car randomly shuts off... bad ignition switch?
I figured I'd try to catch this early since this can be a pretty dangerous situation.
Today as I was driving down the road at about 35 mph the car just randomly shut off for about 2-3 seconds.. all of a sudden it came back to life and I was driving along as normal. I was like WTF?
Then as I pulled into a parking spot at work a few minutes later, the car again just shut off. It starts up fine and all.. no problems there.
I've read a bit (and on shoebox's page on R&R'ing the ignition switch) that it sounds like it could be the ignition switch.
My question is, if I have a randomly bad contact in my ignition switch.. would the car have "started back up" and kept going while in gear?
I just replaced my fuel pump about a year ago with a racetronix unit.. but this seems like it may be a tough to duplicate/diagnose problem.

Re: Car randomly shuts off... bad ignition switch?
After work the car couldn't drive more than a block before it would just die.. this time no restart.. once it died on the road and it would crank crank crank and nothing. Sounded like fuel to me. It even died while idling.
Seems to have been that damn racetronix power lead again. Early last year the wire fell out of the zip ties and onto a header pipe shorting it out. I repaired it but maybe it came loose? I moved the fuel pump harness from the racetronix connection to the OEM connection and the car drove home 12 miles with no hiccups. I'll have to pull that red power lead and see wtf is wrong w/ it.

Re: Car randomly shuts off... bad ignition switch?
Since all the power to your gaguge cluster also runs though the ignition switch, a telltale sign of a bad switch is the gauge cluster doing goofy things. Also, bumping the steering wheel/column can sometimes cause the bad switch to manifest itself. When mine was going south, I could bump the steering wheel with my hand during the no start cranking condition and the switch would make contact enough to allow a start.
