In car Piston Ring Replacement

Is this true, are u able to replace the piston rings while everything is still on, with the heads taken off ofcourse. Do the pistons come up that high?? If this is true i might consider doing this when i take my heads off.
Peace
Omar

I believe the author of the Haynes repair manual stated that it is possible to change the rings with the motor in the car, no details are given though. I wouldn't want to do it and not have the cylinder walls checked, and at least honed.

I'm pretty sure you can, if you unbolt them from the crank that is.
I don't see why you wouldn't pull the block out if you already have all that stuff off. Doing it in the car is going to be a PITA since there's not much room to work in there.

Well i know if ihad to take the oil pan off i might as well pull the motor. I too either read it or heard it from someone that u can take them off while still in the car. I just thought it would be something that could be done while i have my heads off. WOuldnt it help out, or make it worse since the block isnt honed??
Peace

Why would you want to change the rings? Unless the engine has blowby and is burning quite a bit of oil then there is no reason to change the rings.

Okay it seems what i heard wasnt true. I just figured if it could be done, while i add new heads and a cam, it would be a good thing to do. Since my car has 103k on it and im going to have more hp.
Well my car i dont think has blow by, but i do have oil coming out the bottom of my dipstick. Im thinking thats cuase the little gasket is missing when i put it in after my header install. THis leak only happened after i pulled it out and put it back in.
Peace

Rings are fine even at 100k. I would be more concerned about a bearing failure before ring failure. Spun bearings are a common occurance with cam/head swaps.

No way you can remove the pistons without removing the oil pan.
