car noob with an auto 94 z28
hey guys im 17 years old and i have an automatic 94z28 camaro.. it has about 137k miles on it and its completely stock.. i want to upgrade my car and such but i do not know where to begin.. i dont know anything about cars and don't know where to start learning. can u guys please help? any input would be greatly appreciated
Re: car noob with an auto 94 z28
First thing I'd do is change the spark plugs and wires since the car has that many miles on the clock. Then start looking at cold air intakes (CAIs), they are a good first mod and very easy to install. Cat-back Exhausts are another good early mod.
you picked a good place to start learning about cars, welcome to the board.

and wahts a catback exhaust?? do u recommend flow masters? i hear about them a lot!
Re: car noob with an auto 94 z28
There are many different brands of CAI's but they're all generally the same. I have the Lingenfelter brand.
A cat-back exhaust usually replaces the tubing with bigger tubing behind the catalytic converter and has a free-er flowing muffler than stock to increase horsepower

I have a flowmaster muffler on mine and I love it. Great sound.
As for the CAI heres a link:
http://www.thunderracing.com/catalog...vid=4&pcid=182
I have the K&N it works very well. Thunderracing.com is a good site with fast shipping. You can find almost anything you need there. You can look around and get an idea what some good bolt-on parts are, any questions just feel free to ask.
A CAI allows more air into the engine and since the air filter is further away from the engine it will get colder air. Colder air is denser and therefore better for the engine.

Re: car noob with an auto 94 z28
There are many free mods you can do, such as TB bypass, just search the forums, they're all over the place, and as far as CAI is concerned, I liked the K&N.. I think it's all preference of brand not sure one performs better than the others. Plugs and wires definitely, Catback exhaust, Serpentine belt? lol Headers perhaps? cause if I remember right the plugs are a #$^# to get to dang near impossible with manifolds. Oh yes, welcome to the board and to the society where Chevy's dominate Fords and it's all about the Cubic Inches
Re: car noob with an auto 94 z28
I would suggest making sure the car is in tip top shape before doing any mods. You need to do all the maintenance, not only plugs/wires, but trans fluid, rear end lube, cooling system flush, change fuel filter, belts/hoses, PCV valve and you might want to dump some Seafoam in the fuel tank and run it through. Once you know that your car is up on it's maintenance then it's time to begin modding. Start with a cold air kit, K&N makes a nice one that you can get from summit. It's generally where most people start. That or a catback, which you could try a Magnaflow. Pretty inexpensive for a stainless steel catback exhaust. Next you'd want to do some headers, might want to save up for some ceramic coated long tube headers.

Rear end lube is the fluid that goes in the differential. A cooling system flush cleans out the cars cooling system, almost any shop can do it. Seafoam is sold in bottles at car part stores, I don't know much more about it though.
Re: car noob with an auto 94 z28
As far as catbacks are concerned stay away from flowmaster 80 series. It was the first mod I did and allthough I liked the sound, the performance was lacking. There are alot better flowing ones on the market like magnaflow as someone mentioned, hooker, and some priceyer ones like gmmg, borla(I think it sounds kinda truck like)corsa, the list goes on and on. The best thing to do is find out what mod you want to do on your budget. Search for every install you can find and for problems that people might have come across with the mod. Then dig in and if you get stuck, you can allways ask on here or do another search. To get an" idea" of what some catbacks sound like try here

Cooling flush- go to a service shop and tell them to do it.
Seafoam- get it from Napa, put half the bottle in the tank and run it through.
