Car misses only when hot?

94 formula a4. When driving around and the car warms up (over 190*) if i step on the gas it misses (in the 1500-2500 rpm range) i can hear a distinct clicking and the car will 'buck' and lose power and sound like it's gonna die but it won't. If i stomp on it it will kick in and go.

I only does this when hot runs like mad when still below 190*

It does not give me an SES.

edited to read 190* not 120*

i hear the ICM can cause problems you are describing when it gets old. its the small square black box bolted on the same bracket as your coil is... wouldnt be that hard to replace or that expensive. since you dont have any codes.. diagnosis is kinda tough. id say you can rule out plugs and wires since they should cause the problem even when teh car is cold. lotta guys might say its your opti but typically if the opti cuts out on you, it should throw an opti code. so id start ICM then maybe coil if the ICM wont fix it. good luck

I had the same problem and tried fixing it with new fuel pump, filter, plugs and wires, and nothing helped so I ended up putting a 160 thermo in and puttin a manual fan switch in and I havent had a problem since, those mods are great. Hope it helps you. shoebox has a great diagram for man fan switch.

My car is doing the exact same thing. Drove it for about two hours the other day and it seems more like a surge, than a miss. Runs fine when I first start it. Takes about 5 minutes to start surging. I think my thermostat is stuck closed because the temp is like 220*+. Im going to replace that today and see if there is a differnece. I am also going to to the ICM mod where you put 5 or washers behind it and help space it out form the head. Just so you know the ICM, down here in FL is like $70. I bought a new one trying to de-bug an opti problem and really didnt need it.
