car is having starter problems help!

I turn the key, and nothing happens... well what happens is u see all the lights go on and such, and when u turn the ignition, some of the lights go on and off as if the car was starting... so the key and ignition is working... i keep trying trying and tring, and finally it'll start as if nothing happened... its not the security light either... sometimes it takes 2 tries, sometimes it'll take a whole day of key turning... i changed the starter, cleaned the connections, and no luck... i guess one of the cables going to the starter is grounding out randomly... and since i cant take all the damn cables out, i think imma just wire a cable going from the positive to the battery, and whenever it does this non starting thing, turn the ignition to start, and touch the cable to the positive on the batt so the starter turns and since ignition is on start, it'll get it going...

whatcya think can it be?

Might be the switch or several other things. Here is a schematic of what is involved. You should be able to test and get an idea where the trouble is with a test light or meter.

I have the same problem here. It happens randomly and every time I have meter and some time, it's working right. Please let me know if you fix it. I'll do the same. It's probably switch, some times they do weird things - once I was unable to turn my Crown Vic's engine off - I managed to do it by hitting safety fuel pump switch in a trunk

If you have a M6...you might wanna check the wiring underneath your steering wheel. I had the same problem as you and it ended up being the clutch relay switch which only cost $5.77

nope... its an auto... i went from 1st to P and back just to make sure it wasnt the selector or something...

if the starter was shot, it would have been fixed when i changed it, but it didnt

what switch are u talking about valter

i'll do weird thigns ilke turn the ac **** all the way, or slam the hood shut, or move the car left and right by pushing on the door, and it'll start, everytime i do something 'diffrent' it works... problem is i'm running out of ideas... CoUnTryMuZiCZ28 and i got stuck at murray's for an hour today cuz it wouldnt start, so i moved the ac ****, and it started up on the next try

well no ****.... my new 95 T/A is doing the same thing. A4, and when its cold i gotta turn the key to start and back and fourth like 10-20 times b4 it kicks on. when its warm its fine I can hear the relay clicking clearly, but no cranky??? Like i said i just try the key back n forth a buncha times pretty quick and she fires up in under 20 seconds almost everytime. Seems when the motors cold its alot worse. Once warmed up its all better. WTFs going on?

If banging around on the car makes it work, I would lean toward the ignition switch or the connector(s) to it. Next time it does it, hold it in START and bang on the side of the steering wheel. If it cranks, it's probably the switch. There is a replacement procedure on my Tech Page.

I'm having a similar problem with mine (M6).. I hear the click but the starter won't try to turn it over.. I was going to replace the starter with an LT4, but it would suck to do that and find out that it isn't the starter. My mechanic checked all the wiring except the clutch relay.. How hard is it to get to that before I spend 150 bucks on a starter?

Other than that, I'm at a loss but the starter struggles even once it turns over, so it is on its way anyway.

Well im off friday and hopefully if the rain keeps away ill be able to snoop aorund with my test light and see what happens. I dont think its the starter switch in the column since the i can hear the relay for the starter click when i turn it to start from the ignition on position. Im leaning towards a loose power wire to the starter or internal starter problem. If the relay is firing its either not getting power from the heavy (4 gauge?) power source for whatever reason, or theres an internal starter problem which would call for replacing the starter. (you relay dont wanna open up a starter trust me ) Im hoping its a loose wire/corrosion problem i can fix with simple hand tools, if not new starter here i come

Redhunter96...I would hear the click too and I had went and bought a starter(waste of money...broke two screws just to take the exhaust to install the new...big mess!) and that wasn't even the problem..I betcha it's the clutch relay.....its an easy install...have your technician check that too..it should be a blue/white wire. The auto tranny should have a starter relay as well, I would think so.
