car is getting harder to start

i have recently tuned it up with new plugs wires coil and icm. but it has been very hard to start lately. can this be the cap and rotor for the opti and should i even waste my time replacing those or should i just throw in a new opti. it has thrown a code 26. any help is appreciated.

Re: car is getting harder to start

Code 26 is evaporative emissions canister pirge solenoid circuit. As for hard to start give more detail info like it cranks over and doesnt start, or it start up after a while? I would check your fuel system such as a filter first then injectors to see if they need cleaning.

it cranks over but just doesnt wana start up. it only happens after warm starts the first start of the day it starts right up no problems. the fuel pump has been replaced and the injectors have been checked out.

Re: car is getting harder to start

my 95 formula did the same hard start when it was warm. Then I happened to see my elbow was all torn up by the throttle body. I didn't see any of the rips untill I took the elbow off. I replaced it w/ the 1LE and now no more hard starting.

Re: car is getting harder to start

Hmmm...
I have to turn the key 2-3 times before it turns over and it still shakes like its choking and the rpms are jumpy and then it catches and the rpms go to 2k and then slowly drop to idle....My elbow is also torn at the connections. can this be the cause?

Re: car is getting harder to start

I'm not positive that is the cause in all situations but my budy had a 94 T/A that was hard to start just like mine. He replaced his elbow and that fixed his prob, he told me and I replaced mine and now its fine. Worked twice may work a third time just my .02 cents. Hope this helps.

I'm also having a similar problem but was wanting to change my air filter/intake system. Are the trickflow or vortech elbows worth getting? also, where can I get a cone air filter to fit 3" round PVC pipe? hehe

peace

Re: car is getting harder to start

I cant answer the above question

But i had a ? though...
even if the elbow is torn where the screw clamp goes around, will that still prevent from starting smooth? I doubt it its my starter cuz i just replaced
that about 2 months ago

Re: car is getting harder to start

I've got the same thing going on with mine...The exact same thing happens.. Only happens when warm, after the third crank engine revs wildly to 2000 RPM then settles down to normal....Getting worse by the day. I've diagnosed what could be causing it though, I'm losing fuel pressure after I turn the car off. As a matter of fact, I lose pressure as soon as the fuel pump turns off!!

There are a few causes of this: a) Leaky fuel injector(s), b) Bad check valve in the fuel pump assy., c) Bad "fuel pulse dampner" on the fuel pump assy (corvette only?). d) Maybe a bad fuel pressure regulator. I've eliminated a) and c). Don't know how to troubleshoot further without playing the parts swapping game.....

I hope this helps....

Re: car is getting harder to start

I'm not sure if the '94 cars were speed density or Mass Air Flow cars, but if yours is speed density like mine (no MAF sensor on the intake bellow), it wouldn't matter if the bellow was ripped or not. It doesn't sense the volume of air coming through the intake anyway, it's a calculation....

Maybe it's something simple..check your battery terminal to make sure its tight, and then re-check your ICM and Coil connections to make sure everything is snug.

I think your fuel pump needs to be replaced. I may be off on the exact details on how it works but the concept is correct.. There is a valve which which hasa ball in it which allows fuel to flow one way, if the pump is turned off the ball floats back and prevents fuel from flowing back maintaining pressure in the system. If that guy jams up it gets harder to start. I'm not sure why it doesnt do it when cold though, so it may be something else.

Check the fuel pressure, check your intake elbow underneath for tears, listen for your fuel pump whirring before you start the car. Also try priming your fuel pump on a cold start and letting it sit for 10 seconds and then engage the starter. If it doesnt start i means your cars not holding fuel pressure.

Re: car is getting harder to start

I've got a similar problem with mine. In the mornings when the car's cool it fires up perfectly, however after it's been driven a little, starting the car takes damn near 5 seconds. Also it helps if I give the car some gas while I'm starting it. Strange, cause I thought it was only useful to give carb'd cars gas when starting them.

Re: car is getting harder to start

In the mornings sometimes on the first crank it will turn but most of the time on the 2nd it will fire up and this is w/out driving the car for about 5+ hrs. Any cranking up within the 1st hour the car shakes and sputters and then the rpms jump to 2k and slowly go down to normal idle....
My car has MAF so maybe it is a tear on the elbow...

Re: car is getting harder to start

I had an air intake leak and a torn elbow. It was causing hard starts if the car sat for a few days, and it would rev whenever it felt like it. Put a new elbow on and it continued. Replaced the Intake and it solved the problem *KNOCK ON WOOD*
