Car died....need help

I was on my way to work tonight and I stopped and got gas. After filling up, I get back in and turn my key over and all my dash lights come on and then go off(Dome also went off) before I can attempt to start it. I turn the key back and the only light on is my seatbelt light. So I pop the hood, and check to make sure my battery cables are still on fine, which they appeared to be. I jump back in the car and the dome light is on again. I turned the key over and everything went off again. Well, I got a ride to work and then a co-worker had jumper cables so I returned to my car in about an hour and a half. Hook up the jumper cables and after about 30 seconds or so my dome lights come back on. I gave it another couple minutes before trying to start it. This time I turned the key over and all my dash lights came on and my volt meter came up to a little below half(sorry don't remember exactly what half is). I turned the key over to start it and everything went off again. Turned the key back off and after about 15 seconds or so the dome lights come on again. I let turned the key over to the run position and they went off immediatly. So we waited and the dome lights came on again, and we waited several minutes again, but same thing. Lost all power when key is turned to start position. My co-worker was in a hurry to get home, but as I was grabbing the keys out of the ignition and locking my door I thought I could hear a clicking noise coming from underneath the dash on the passenger side. Prior to this my car was running fine with no problems at all. Could this just be a completely dead battery or something more?

Maybe check the battery posts and clean them. I had a problem to where after i hooked the + terminal back up and tightned it down, I truned the key to ACC and everything came on, then went to crank and it died.. so i just cleaned the posts and bam, it started for me.

Post appeared to be pretty clean, but it was dark outside. I'll be able to see better in the morning.

If the headlights go out too, sounds like a battery or cable connection.

Changed the battery it started fine and ran fine so far. Tested the alternator and its fine. I haven't got to drive it very much yet though.
