Car decided to stop working properly...

Today was an excellent day. I took the Camaro to get the AC discharged and swung by my friend's house. New wheels were on and everything was fine. So on the way back to my house the car starting making a weird noise and the oil pressure nosedived right to Zero. I hurried up and shut the car off and got it towed home. The car cranks fine but wont turn over...its almost there but it wont do it and has no oil pressure. I tried it 2 times to see what it will do and thats it. I'm taking off the AC tomorrow and draining the oil. My oil pressure has been around 10psi or under for a good while and everything was ok before...I figured the sending unit was just getting old.

So....I'm thinking that the pickup fell off or the pump itself just let go or something related to the pump went. I was doing about 15 mph or so making a turn from a side street to another side street when this happened. Any suggestions?

well, the fact that it now wont start means you probably fubard something up in the motor.

the combination of noise+engine dieing+ now wont restart..

I'm no expert but I suggest taking the oil pan off and doing a thorough inspection. Oil pump finally died, pick-up gone, something clogged, who knows.

As for your car not starting... Well, I'd take care of the oil issue first, then work on that. If your car started making a wierd noise something may have been damaged, and the top of the engine shows signs before the bottom does (thank god) when there is no oil.

The timing chain in my Caddy had plastic on it to keep it quiet. The plastic started coming off and clogged up everything in the bottom, oil pressure slowly went to zero. In the end I was driving it around and started hearing this rattly noise under the hood. Had to pull over and have it towed. Basically the lifters weren't getting oil any more and were letting me know in an audible fashion. Anyway, minutes and even seconds are all it takes to do significantly more damage to an engine when it's not getting lubrication.

But it cranks so obviously the damage isn't too bad, but might have to dig into the top of the engine to see if anything gave up.

Good luck, hope nothing serious is wrong.

Jordon, do you think that the problem may be with the motor itself? I have no oil pressure whatsoever now so I'm dead set on the pump as the main concern mainly because the car ran great and very strong seconds before it acted up. This was basically as out of the blue as it gets. The motor didnt tick or make any kind of noise prior to the trouble either. So if the pick-up fell off or the pump went, would that cause the car not to start? All the needles flinch or read the correct values when I tried cranking it except the oil pressure needle which remained buried. Thanks for any advice from anyone who can help me out.

Thanks for the advice guys...unfortunately if the motor is gone. I'm screwed. Dont have the money for a rebuild. I'll just have to tear into it and see whats up. I removed the oil cap and a little bit of smoke came out for a second then that was that.

One last question before I leave the subject alone until I get the pan off....any idea what could do this and make the car not start back up? If the pump did not work, would that cause the car to not turn over? Its 80% there but it just wont go all the way and run.
