When the car is idling, whether it is driving or just sitting, and I press down on the accelerator, it bogs down to where I think it is going to die.

I drove to work today and it was just fine until I got to the last stop sign. Then, as I downshifted into first, I thought I noticed it running kind of rough. When I accelerated from the stop, it bogged down and even backfired. So, when I pull up to work, I revved the engine and saw that it bogs down really bad.

What should I check first? The spark plugs?

 

Yeah start with the spark plugs and look the wires over too then the fuel filter. If thats not it check the fuel pressure it might be the pump. If its not that post and I'll see what else I can come up with.

 

try spraying some carb cleaner in your throttle body, check your air filter....and is your car throwing you a service engine soon light?

 

No service engine light. I'll buy a new air filter and have a shop replace the plugs/wires and fuel filter.

It might be my imagination, but the car almost sounds like it is running louder. Again, that could just be my mind (such as it is ) playing tricks on me.
