car backfired a few times than died

ok, long story short, a buddy of mine was driving his Z down the freeway and it backfired a few times then died... we had it towed to my house and we tested the fuel preasure (sits steady at 41), replaced the coil pack, plugs, and wires, verified the valve train was ok, and it still wont run. You can turn the car over and it will start and idle at 200 rpm's as long as you keep your foot on the break. ignition timing was at about 12 degrees. I think it's the opti-spark... any other ideas of what it could be if it isn't this?

I'm no genius with these things but I am guessing the opti as well. They seem to do some really oddball stuff on their way out. Good luck with it.

I picked up a used opti last night and I plan on installing it tonight. I'm hoping that this is it... if this does not do it, I have no clue what could be next. I figured this was a good place to post to see what people thought.

Ya, I've swapped it on mine and we already have the waterpump off etc... and I got the opti with 50k miles for 40 bux, so I figure it's worth swapping out anyways... waiting on the RTV to cure on the waterpump is the longest part.

Something similar happened to my 94. I was driving it when all of a sudden it back fired and cut off. I tried to fire it up and it would die right away. After a while it would just crank. When I checked there was spark at the coil but none out the opti. Most likely its the opti I would say..

It ended up bein the opti.... we replaced the opti and got new 8.5 wires (the wires were a complete PITA to route) and it fired right up. He said it runs better now than it ever did.
