Question Canton Oil Pan...

Just ordered the canton oil pan (6qt) for my 383 with pickup. Ive heard mixed feelings on this...my engine builder recommened it while some friends have told me some have fitting issues...anyone running this pan and if so, how's the fit and performance of the pan? Thanks in advance!

I have a good friend that put one on his '95 Z. He said his Jet-hot long tubes were a PITA. He also has a 396 so he had to do a little clearencing in the pan for the rods to clear. (Not sure if you will)
Hope this helps somewhat.

I have the canton pan on my 383 as well.

The only thing we had to do is to cut small part of the dip stick tube holder so it does not hit on the inside of the pan and bend the lip of the pan so the Knock sensor does not hit against it. Other than that it fit perfectly.

Hope that helps, if not shoot me an email and I can send you a pic of where we bent the lip of the pan to clear the knock sensor.

Thx,
Claude

THEY SUCK!!!!!!!! The thing leaked out of two of the welds, had to cleareance the header on the driver side, and the customer service was the worst I ever dealt with. I have taken a personal vow to never allow anyone I personally know to buy one. You have been warned. Go with miledon.....you will thank me later.

If there is a way you can return it get the one from nu-tek they designed it to fix the fitment issues.

I totally agree.

Also, check for leaks in the welds BEFORE you install.
We learned the hard way.

I have no problems with the newer Canton oil pan.

The only thing I had to do was cut a little off the dipstick holder.

That's it. No leaks, and no fit issues with headers or anything.

Either you have/had issues, or you haven't. If it didn't fit, you had a problem. You made reference to the 'newer pan'. The newer pan (15-242) had addressed the dipstick issue. The previous pan (244) had the dipstick issue. The newer pan uses a different core, which, by info I have and experiences of others, did not suffer from the tube interference issue. I have the 244 pan. This pan is virtually worthless, if it doesn't bolt up to the block. I REFUSE to alter stick tubes for anyone's pan. I ended up grafting that area of an oem pan to my 244.

When I bought my oil pan from Nu-Tek, I specifiacally told them
that I wanted the newer oil pan. After I assembled everything that was the only issue with my pan. I needed to trim a little off the tube and it would fit right in. I new that this had been adressed as well, and when I contacted Nu-Tek they said I had the new pan. I even emailed them the pictures of the oil pan in and out to double verify that this was the newer version I received. It is the newer version and I still had that issue. Now why I don't know.
I hear ya though, if it doesn't work why alter it. In some cases it easier to do a quick mod like that rather than to tear everything down and have to deal with shipping again and maybe customer service.

Actually, with block on engine stand, not in my case. I'm a stubborn kraut that felt it was gonna be used as intended, which means no tube trimming, or else not be used. It took time to cut out oem pan section, and graft it with precision to canton, but the result is worth it, and it shows. It is a damn shame Canton was/is aware of their engineering/construction screwup, but decided NOT to correct the fitup issue. They (canton) can send me the $75 (cheap) to offset my labor any time they want.

Long customer service story

I agree that there customer service sucks. The pan I had was the first design and i had installed it on the motor and filled it with oil, but never ran it, because it wouldn't clear the steering rack. I called canton and they said to just shim the motor mounts up a little. (Even though it can throw off drivetrain and driveshaft angles) So I tried this and in order to get it to clear I had to install 3/8 spacers on all the bolts, which require egg-shapping the holes because the mounts are on an angle. I wasn't happy with this and the quality of the pan so I sent it back to recieve a new pan. one week later they called and said they couldn't do the exchange because my pan was beet up, scratched, and full of sludge, even though it was never ran. They said I have 3 options: 1. Buy the new pan for 299.99 2. They would notch my pan for 75.00 3. Do nothing at all and send my pan back at my shipping expense.
I was getting angry and to top it off, it was a women on the phone. I asked her why they couldn't give me a break on this because it is there pan that was faulty. She insisted that there was nothing wrong with the pan that it was my car that had problems. I asked her why they revised the pan if there was nothing wrong with the first one. She stood here ground as still insisted that there was nothing wrong and this was the first she ever had any complaints. I was still upset that when I ordered the pan that I was not informed they had a revised pan, which they did at the time. I could tell she was getting angry with me because she had work to do and she was off in ten minutes. I asked her one more time to give me a deal, because the pan is worthless to me, she them quoted to me " I don't know why it doesn't work but there is nothing at all wrong with our pan. Who the hell knows what **** you guys do to your cars to have these problems but I'll tell you this, I've probabally got twenty years on you and there is nothing you can do about this. and she hung up on me." Even though I never once was impolite with her. what she didn't know was that I had a phone recorder and I called back and asked to talk with her manager. I explained the situation and played the tape. He agreed to keep my pan and give me the revised one for $75 delivered, which was my best option. He also admitted that there pan was faulty and there was quite a number of complaints on that pan.

I personally will never neal with canton again.
I would rather pay $600 to have one custom made than $200 from them. Now if they had agreed to swap the pans for $75 in the first place, I would be talking only good about them right now, but like I said, there customer service sucks.
