can't get my hub off!

ok guys i am trying to get my hub off so i can get my timing chain at tdc i can't get the hub off at all. i bought a tool a long time ago to take it off a while back. i went to get the hub off to get it back to TDC but it doesn't come off. i stripped the tools mega bolt trying to get it off. i went to the autostore and rented a one. is there anything else i can do/use to help me get this thing off? heat gun? torch? i don't want to break the tool i rented. this is an lt1 motor and i want to be able to see my timing, i have the bolt out half way like what the books says. i need pointers please!

First you have to take the bolt out of the center of the balancer. Then you have to put a 3" long allen head bolt into the center of the balancer so that the removal tool has something to push off of. It will come off, you just have to make sure your doing it exactly right.

according to the book it says

"use a steering wheel puller to remove the hub adapter from the crank snout. Its adviseable to install the center bolt into the crank snout (install by engaging only about 1/2" deep) to provide the puller's center pilot a base of contact. once the hub walks far enough off the crank snout, this bolt can be removed" and that is what i did and it came out some but thats all the bolt on my puller literally stripped!

If your using the original bolt that was in the center, then the head of the bolt is too large to let the balancer pull all the way off. Take out that center bolt and use either a 1/4" extention or a 3" allen head bolt. Trust me, do this and it will come off. The hole that is in the center of the balancer is too small to slip over the head of the bolt you are using.

And don't forget to throw away the used crank bolt and replace with new when you put it back together!

I disagree with how that book says to do it. Putting that kind of stress on the crank snout threads is a bad idea. Whatever you use to put into the bolt hole, it must be hardened or a high grade bolt. Some people have gotten a 1/4" extension stuck, when they did not pay enough attention to what they were doing, so I don't recommend that, either. The tool that is designed for the job uses a hardened rod slipped into the bolt hole. If you thread a longer bolt into the hole, grind the thread end into a cone shape, so it cannot get stuck when you bottom it out in the blind hole.
