Can't easily access my air filter with my Moroso CAI...any alternative CAI system?

I removed my stock air box and installed the Moroso CAI kit a while back. The only part that I don't like is that I don't have good access to the filter to clean it. There doesn't seem to be any way to access the filter from the top.....you have to take the stuff apart underneath to gain access to that area. I see so many cars these days with the filter sitting right there under the hood. Does anyone know of any alternatives to what I'm doing now that will allow the filter to just sit under the hood somewhere that's easily accessible, or does it just work best when the filter is down low in that hole where it is?

Thanks!

Robert

it works better down below, the air is colder there.

This really shouldn't be an issue for most people. In average conditions the product claims you should be going like 50,000 miles between cleanings.

Now I don't think I would let mine go that long, but if I clean it every 10,000 it'll still only require "work" to get it off every 3 years.

Bottom line: If your complaining about having to get it on and off so frequently, you are probably over cleaning it.

Actually I haven't been cleaning it b/c of the work I knew was involved Call me lazy. I would guess it's been maybe 15K or so since I've cleaned it, but it's nice to know the manufacturer says as much as 50K.

Thanks for the input...

I had the Moroso CAI and I was easily able to pull the filter out from the top. It was very easy to do. It did however scuff the wire mesh just a tad.

As far as even easier I now have the AS&M CAI. It pulls out from the top without scuffing.

If you are removing the filter from the bottom you are doing something wrong.

wrd1972,

Here is a pic of my CAI. Maybe the way I installed it is the reason I can't access it very well. You will notice the bolts holding on the metal plate that came with the CAI were put in from the bottom going up....so I can't see any way (with it the way it is) that I could easily get the filter up through the top...unless it will fit through the opening there? Maybe you could just take a look at the pic and see what you think.

Thanks,

It seems to me that the threded part is on the wrong side of the plate. I bought mine second hand so I never had an install sheet.

Here is what I did. Put two bolts in the top of the bracket and tightenm these will be indexing bolts only meaning no nuts. Then drill two holes in the chassis to (index) retain the bracket with the bolts you put in. It will just sit down in there and be easily removed with out fasteners once the duct work is removed.

Order a replacement splash panel. They modified the design and put a "flap" that you can open by removing just 2 screws to get the filter out from underneath. It about a $20 part. A lot cheaper than buying an new CAI.

Bud,

Just to clarify, Moroso modified their splash panel for their CAI kit? If so, should I contact them to purchase the part?

Thanks!

I just called Moroso and asked if they had made any modification to the splash panel for their CAI for the LT1 and the guy told me they had not =/

Read what he said - he never said Moros makes it. Step #1 - Order a replacement panel (from the dealer). #2 -Open the flap in it.

I ran the Callaway Honker (a duplicate of the Moroso) for 5 years. I cleaned it once, following the K&N instructions for using their filters. Cleaning it too frequently can damage it - its should only be cleaned 20-25 times.

If doing routine maintenance is too much trouble for the performance gains, you might want to think about getting something that doesn't require performance mods.

I can't tell you what kind of mileage I clean my filters on, but I do it in the neighborhood of once a year. My cars are low mileage though, I might put 10-12,000 miles on em, between the two, each year.

I should have been more clear. GM has modified the splash panel design. The splash panel is the plastic piece under the corners of the car's nose that forms the floor of the bow the CAI filter lives in. The redesigned splash panel has 2 slits and a crease that form a hatch or flap. All you need to do is remove 2 screws to open the flap and then you can remove the filter through the bottom. You don't need to remove the airdam and splash panel, you can just open the flap.
