Can you guys hear your valves with headers & 1.6 crusing?
Can you guys hear your valves with headers & 1.6 crusing?
Can you hear a very slight tick from the valves with Pace Setter long tubes and 1.6's coming from the drivers side. If you go along the valve cover, you can't hear any one valve ticking? So I am thinking its just normal valve train noise on 1.6's? 1/4 past zero lash.
Noticable at idle. But if you go along the valve cover with a screw driver to your ear, you can't hear any particular one spot the ticking is coming from. Just more noticable on the drivers side. Definatly not knock of anything like that though. How much noise is common on 1.6's? More noticable when hot I think?
I have heard many others suggest to other posts on here that it is jsut you being able to hear the valves through the headers. Went along the headers, on each primary with a screw driver to the ear. No one noisy one.
I wonder if I am just stupid and have a leak where the slip fits hook up to the Y pipe? It jsut really seems to be more noticable under the hood?
Suggestions?

I got the same problem. It isn't loud enough to be a faulty lifter (I heard those were really noisy, but correct me someone if I am wrong).
I used a stethoscope from my paramedic buddy (little did I know his was the Cadillac of stethoscopes at like $250) but still couldn't nail the sound.
It is a ticking on mine, very rhythmic, through all RPMS, and I believe it is either a TINY exhaust leak or possibly the valves.

Yea tahts what I am thinking. I really was figuring it was jsut a valve that needed adjusted. But with the valve cover off, adjusting them, it gets LOUD and very destinct where the noise is from if one is loose. So I thought with the valve cover on it would be easy to go with a screw driver to the ear along the cover to hear where the tick was ? Its pretty faint. I kept thinking it was a valve ... but maybe it is my exhaust. Seems like alot of the pace setter guys have had this problem? I did have it before 1.6's I believe, but I dont know. I know they shouldnt be the valves though at a 1/4 past zero adjusted running. Especially with less than 500 miles on it.

Adjust your lash. My drivers side I can bearly hear at idle, but it is there. At cruising speeds that is just plain scary. Can you move the rocker side to side?

What do you mean at crusing speeds its jsut plain scary? You can hear them?
You can move rockers left and right on anything with a hydraulic lifter after a few seconds to bleed down. They were set 1/4 past zero with it running. I keep thinking maybe it is the exhaust lol

Car is looking really sharp Matt. You've been moddin' that bitch to hell.

I am on 7/16" studs. I actually do my preload while the motor is off. I remove the wire to the ignition coil that goes to the opti and then have someone crank the motor by hand. Just like tap it. So one piston can come to TDC. I do the preload by checking how loose the rocker is first, then i turn it 1/4 to 1/2" turn. I then move on to the next one.

Wow, cool that this thread popped up. I had been all over the top end of my new 355 because of this very thing. I even reset the lash on my rockers because I thought I had a loose rocker. Im 99% positive that my tick is an exhaust leak.
Re: Can you guys hear your valves with headers & 1.6 crusing?
if the valves were jsut adjusted less than 500 miles ago though, and were 1/4 turn past no noise, with it running, I dont see one needing readjusted. Especially on a <17,000 mile car. The lifters and **** cant be that bad. I am not all that hard on it. Havent spun it up really since they were adjusted either.
Ill have to plug the exhaust tommorow and see if I can hear a more defined hiss out of it. See if it may be leaking.

Re: Can you guys hear your valves with headers & 1.6 crusing?
Could be a leak. I had 3 bolts missing on my passenger header causing a sound like lifter tick. I couldnt believe it was missing so many bolts. After replacing the bolts the car sounds top notch. However, my drivers side is easily accessible and there arent any exhaust leaks and there is defiantly some type of lifter tick. My motor only has 4k miles on it, but I think I left all mine a little loose... Well looser than they could have been.
