You can lower the K member without taking the bolts completely out. That will barely give you enough room to take the oil pan off. Would really help if it's on a lift.

if you have access to a lift and a tranny jack you can lift the engine with the motor mounts loose. if you dont have access to a lift, put the car on stands, get a cherry picker and lift the engine from the front with the mounts loose. you can get the tranny pan off without dropping the k-member or without pulling the tranny...i've done it to replace my main bearings.

You can lift the engine just enough to get the pan off without dopping the frame.

Thats what I did. Even though it would have been pretty easy at the time to just pull the engine I did it in the car. Its just a small pain to wiggle the pan out.

Why do you want to replace the pump? If pressure is low bearing should be suspect LONG before the pump and the stock pump is very good so blindly "upgrading" it is if anything asking for trouble.

Why do you want to change the pump if it's new?

sbc oiling systems do not go bad under proper car. think about it...the oil pump is a couple gears moving. thats all it contains. there's not much that can go wrong.

you can change the pump fairly easy with the engine in the car, make sure you put the engine in the 6 oclock position, (I think its 6:00) this pulls the counter weight up out of the pan which makes it ALOT easier to remove.

Re: Can You Change The Oil Pump Without Pulling The Engine?

do you not have pressure at the gauge or no pressure at all. if the gauge is all you are using to check then try a mechanical gauge and go from there.
