Can the starter go bad and still test good?
Can the starter go bad and still test good?
I brought my starter to the good old AutoZone (3 different ones cause most of those guys are idiots) It tested fine all three times. When I go to start my car, it won't start right. When I press on the gas a couple of times it will start right. SO my Mechanic gave my dad a tool to put on my engine( I am at school now and my car is at home so I don't know what kind of tool or what it looks like) Well anyway my mechanic said if the light comes on the starter is bad, and the my dad said the light came on. What would cause my starter to be test okay, but be bad. Is this possible? I am goning home tomorrow to try putting a new starter. (Nice 10 min $150 job). I just wanted to see what would cause this and see if it was possible?
Don't know what the thing was they put on the car.
Also confusing that you say you can press on the gas pedal and it will start. Without more specific info, it is hard to say what your problem is. Pressing on the gas is not going to have anything electrical or mechanical to do with your starter.
Almost sounds like it is cranking ok but just won't fire up like it should.
Need more details.

it is a light that hooked up to one of the wires onthe starter. If my dad bangs ont eh starter witha hammer it will start. I am going home tonight and changing it. Will let you gusy know if that was it.
