Can someone tells me what their gas gauge does at startup?

Ok, here's my problem. I put a 98 155mph cluster in my 97 RS getting ready for my swap in a few weeks. Well, the Gas gauge doesn't seem to work right. When I filled up, it didnt go up to F at all, didn't even move. So I took the needle off, and put it back on at F, and then it never dropped. I put my old cluster back in for a min to see how much gas i have left. Now, when I start the car the needle goes up like half way from where its currenly at and comes back down to where I put it. This tells me that it has power going to it, and that it's able to move. Anyone have any suggestions on how to get it to work. What does everyone else gauge do when start up. I tried with my old gauge, and it doesn't move at all. It just stays where it is which is where the gas level is. Is this cluster bad? I hate to get rid of it after how much I paid for it, plus it only has 17k on it.

Question

Can anyone just tell if their gas gauge moves at all during start up? And if it does, where does it move to, or how much does it move in which direction?

I believe mine stays pretty close to wherever it was when the key was turned off. When the key is turned on, it may move up a little, but does nothing else.

I have 2 95s and the both stay where they are when you turn them off.And I also found out the other day, when the needle gets to E,it's EMPTY!
I think you have a wiring problem if you put the old one back in and it didn't work either.Check all the conections especially the grounds which there may be more than one.

I'm clueless as what to do now. My original one doesn't move when start up, just like everyone else's as mentioned. This new one jumps over a quarter and comes back, then doesn't move at all from that point during driving. I guess the new cluster I have is bad then? Does anyone know if I can switch anything out to make it work, or able to swap out the odometer in order to keep the low miles on this one with another one? Or just swap out the whole mechanism that makes for the gas gauge? Anyone have any insite on this? Thanks again.

when I turn my car off the needle can move as much as 1/4 tank back....depending on how much gas i have in the tank. ie. if I have a full tank of gas, and turn my car off, it'll eventually go to about 3/4 tank, when i turn it back on it goes back to where it should be. if I have 1/2 tank, it'll move back very little, just depends on how much gas i have. it's always been that way as it does what it supposed to do when the car is on i suppose.
