can a opti go bad just from sitting?

has anyone herd of a optispark going bad from just sitting for a few mos? my car went into the shop few mos back get the motor rebuilt, went to fire it up today for the first time and there getting no sprak and say they've checked everything and it has to be the opti?? it was put on the car not to long before it went in to get rebuilt, maybe 3k miles old and seemed to work fine when it went in, now from sitting in a box the last few mos they say it must of went bad, and that is kinda normal for a opti to die from not being used for over 2-3weeks, possible?

no way

An opti will not go bad if it sits in a box for a few weeks...they sit for much longer in the distribution channel.

Mine sat for two years not being used and was fine when I got everything back together. As a matter of fact, that same opti has been sitting for the past year as well. I might get to fire it up this weekend and see if it is still good.

Mine did. Put it up for the winter, come spring time bad opti. I got a code 36 hi pulse res... something. My car only had about 33k miles on it at the time and that opti only had about 15k miles. I opened the opti up after i took it off somehow there was a lot of corosion in it. I switched over the the 95 vented style opti after that.

Might I ask who is "they"? Sounds like another case of BTO (Blame The Opti), when all else fails BTO.

So "they" built your motor, maybe "they" didn't time the Opti correctly, maybe "they" broke a wire in the harness to the Opti, or maybe "they" don't really know what the real problem is so "they" BTO.

Sorry, I'll go take my meds now.

well mine was converted to the vented opti when we did the double roller timing chain and has obviously still went bad :-( the guy who is building my car said its happened to his personal car a few times in the past when he would let it sit for a few mos at a time, i dunno.....

Is it setting any codes? How do they know it "has obviously still went bad"?

My car sits for months on end without being started, and the Opti has never "went bad".

I agree, "sitting" is not a good enough reason to have a opti failure.

How about you have "them" take it apart and show you what's broken. If you are in a high humidity area it can rust/corrode, but that's really a separate issue then just sitting.

They probably just put it in wrong... it's still possible to do with a non-vented 94 optispark right?

Even if the Opti is indexed incorrectly, you will still get spark. It just won't happen at the correct point in the crank rotation.
