Can only get master and slave together..
That's what the haynes manual says. Is this true? AAP and Auto Zone sells the master and slave cylinders seperately, but the the book says they come together as a unit from the factory already pre bled, so you can't get them seperately and put them together.
The seperate aftermarket setups are problem prone. Stick with the GM piece - you are correct it does come as one unit, prefilled and prebled... no hassles.. just bolt it up (though that is a bit of a pain

The other two posters are correct, the slave and master cylinder are sold as one piece by GM, pre-bled and come with the reservoir full of fluid ready for install. However it is not uncommon to replace either the master or slave if the other is functioning normally. Basically their is a roll pin on the master and slave where the hose connects, you punch this out and replace the appropriate cylinder with the new one, put the hose back and on and reinstall the roll pin.
Just FYI, a buddy of mine is running off a master cylinder he replaced from O'reilley's and has had no problems with just replacing the master.

But if you take that roll pin out and disconnect the line, doesn't that release the pressure in the lines and cause you to have to bleed the system? ( I ask this because the I had great trouble bleeding the old system)
For sure you will have to bleed the system, but that shouldn't be any problem if the system is in good shape and not sucking air somewhere. Brake systems get bled routinely and don't cause any trouble. Clutch slave/master setups shouldn't be any problem either. In fact, I blew up my slave cylider doing something stupid. i bought a new slave, and hooked it into the sytem without any trouble at all. Just followed the directions.
