Can new gears affect Opti?

Hey guys, I put 3.73's in my car 2 months ago, but haven't had the computer recalibrated. Since then, I've replaced my Opti, plugs, wires, and coil to cure my popping stumbling problem. When the Opti was replaced the problem went away, but now its back, and the cars in the shop again. I was talking to a friend, and he claims that since the computer wasn't recalibrated, its screwing up the timing and shorting out the Opti. Is this possible?

Thanks, Keith
