can minor oil leak damage clutch

i have an oil leak around the clutch somewhere and i was wondering if this could damage the clutch. i believe it is engine oil, not tranny fluid. just wondering because i have been having problems getting the car into gear some times.

I highly doubt that an ENGINE oil leak will cause your shifting problems, but if oil gets on your clutch disk continually it will wear out sooner than later...

i was wondering if the oil is getting on the clutch disk. i don't know, maybe the engine oil can't even get to the disk and only tranny fluid can get in there. boy this sucks. i think i will be replacing the slave and master cylinder and see if that is my problem. is the best bet just to remove the clutch/tranny and check things out? any other suggestions or ideas?

Your slave cylinder could be low on fluid or have air in the system. Did you check the reservoir in the engine compartment? If it's low then that is most likely your problem and you will have to bleed the system cos it will most likely have air in it and fill it back up. It's worth a shot anyways and if the oil on your tranny is engine oil it could be the infamous intake manifold leak or the rear main seal. hope for the best

well i had the intake manifold leak fixed not too long ago. however, i think it is the rear main seal. yeah, there is fluid in the resevoir in the engine compartment. by the way, how much fluid goes in there. that weird rubber gasket in there confuses me. should that be inplace when i check the fluid level? because it is full with that thing inplace. there may be air in the lines so i am just going to replace the whole system.

I had a rear main seal leak a few years ago, totally toasted my clutch. The clutch looked to be in good shape when it was pulled out, just oily. Was crawling under the car today and found that I have the same leak again... what a pain.
