Can metal filings ruin heads?

How likely is it after throwing a rod, that my timing chain, cam, heads, opti and anything else on the top end are damaged? Could the metal filings found in the oil ruin my heads? And how would a machine shop check to make sure nothing is damaged if i sent all these parts to them. If they're not visibly damaged, it doesn't mean that there not correct?

Unless somehow the medal shavings got into the combustion chamber (impossible), your heads will be fine. Your opti and timing chain should also be fine. Inspect your cam for any irregular wear patterns/nicks/etc that could have been caused by metal shavings.

If you throw a rod, the piston will be free to float up and down the bore. Everytime I get a motor that has thrown a rod, at least one of the heads has been hurt by debries, pistons contacting valves, etc. They should be checked out at the machine shop. The cam should be wet-magnafluxed and visually inspected, same for the crank and other rods.

Those parts that used to be a rod are flying around in the crankcase at extreme velocities and can do damage.

Make sure they clean them good. It didn't run long enough to mess up the oil side of the head, but ya need to check for contact damage everywhere in the chambers and bore area.
