Can a set of heads be ported without having the valves and springs? if not, do you just need the valves?
Like if i have a bare set of castings ported, can i buy the valves later and when im ready get a valve job and put them in?
thanks

The porter doesn't necessarily need the valves but he should know the size of the valves being used.
The only problem I see here is the fact that the seats, once cut, will need to be blended into the throat. In that case it'd be beneficial for the porter to work the heads before and maybe even after the machine work.
Hopefully Chuck, Phil or Lloyd will chime in here as to their preferences but you could just find out what your porter recommends and go that route.

I prefer it is my head porter has the valves, spring/locks/retainers, and the gasket set I am using. That way all ports are matched, valves are deshrouded as much as they can be (using the head gasket as a template), and the valves seated, lapped, and blended. Besides...they can't really flow your heads without the valves...

We ended up having to pay off the lien on our house from my old boss so we could refinance, and they gave us basically 3 hours to do it or we would have had to go through closing all over again. So the mod money got spent on that temporarily...

LOL.
Just depends.. I won't do stuff without a set of valves. Most guys don't install bronze guides/liners... but poor tolerances & iron as a guide material arent something I want to give to people. So.. yeah, I'd need the valves to be able to hone guides to the proper tolerances. A VJ? I won't do it without the valves I'm using.. how am I supposed to check my job out, or finish valve prep w/o them?
Lapping.. everybody's doing it, but we talked about that before
