Camshaft ?? For you Gurus!
Camshaft ?? For you Gurus!
Hey all, I started my project on my 94 Z28, and I am totally new to internal engine, especially in the LT1... The Motor that Im using is the stock LT1, it has about 90K miles on it, runs really strong, uses no oil, and Im wondering what kind of cam to put in without major modification to the motor. I heard something about having to change the rockers on the heads? or something?! Please help me im lost!
Re: Camshaft ?? For you Gurus!
I don't think a cam swap is the place to get your feet wet. But FWIW, any cam worth swapping for will require new springs. And while you are at it, also swapping in a set of 1.6:1 roller rockers will help get the most out of the cam and can be done "incidently", you will be removing the rockers anyway to change out the springs.
The GM "hot cam" kit is a nice way to go. The cam works well with stock heads and programming and has all the major parts needed for a decent price (~$550).
GM's description: This off-highway hydraulic roller camshaft kit has the major valve train components to convert production LT1 engines from showroom stock racing, or hop up your small block Chevrolet V-8 that was originally equipped with a roller tappet camshaft. The 1.6 roller rockers, light weight valve spring caps, special designed valve springs and hot camshaft offers a significant gain in horsepower at a reasonable price. This kit includes the following items:

Depends on what you want. Hot cam is weak, IMO.

That was my first cam that I ever put into my motor, best bang for the buck. Stock heads, 3500 Stall Converter and my best time ever for that cam was in the 11.80's (low DA), but pretty much ran in the low 12's at my home track.
