Camshaft Question.

Ive done my best to research this topic, but I havent been able to find a straight anwser. And I need to know this so I dont go wasting my money on picking out the wrong cam.

But if I dont port my heads, which would be the ideal cam to go with out of these 2? CC306 or GM847? The heads will get ported probably the following year. But as of now I need to pick between one of the two cams, CC306 or 847. Which would be the better to go with? Or are they both going to be around the same?

Also when I bought the heads, I was told they have the smaller combustion chambers. I guess he said they were like that on the 93's? And when you look at them, they look more like the lt4 chambers. So are these 52cc?

Thanks for the help,
Mike

On stock heads both will just about being the same. The 306 is a proven cam.

atljar is running the GM 847 on stock heads, with the car running in the 11's I believe.

.......... I don't know if I'd say that car is running in the 11s. Yes he ran in the 11s once for a pass in ridiculously good weather, -1150 DA. And i give him full credit for his 11 second best. That is what it is though, his best, not his dial in for the weekly brackets. It's the exception to the norm with the 'magical 847', and even an exception for his car.

60: = 1.687
1/4: = 11.98
mph: = 115.44

Here's what Gregg 97z did with a 'measly' hotcam the other week
12.18@115 & 1.86 60' • 327rwhp/328rwtq

With atljar's 60' Gregg would have made 11.98 too.

I know I know, he didn't at thats all that matters, All I'm trying to say here is don't imply that the 847 is going to get people into the 11s and is that much better than some of the other options.

not hating over here, great times both guys, just trying to give the whole story

Mike,

People have had success with both. My question is:

Are you willing to rev to 6800?

96Z is right. Both would be about the same, but the GM847 is a proven cam too.

11.98 makes it an 11 second car, even if just barely. Given time, with tweaking and adjustments his car will only get faster, thats if the motor hold up.

I know man, like i said i wasn't trying to start a war in here. I was just trying to point out that he wasn't runnING it all summer long in the 11s consistently. It rAn 11s once. Which is great, realistically though one timeslip just doesn't make a sound arguement that everybody should run out there and get that cam paying no attention to the conditions or the rest of his setup.

Like you said, if his motor holds up, which is along the same lines as my question : "are you willing to spin to 6800?"

He's not gonna get any faster without more of that -DA weather

No way in hell do I plan on reving that high. I dunno if your just using it as an example.

Im not going to be trying to be taking this car to the track all the time to cut my best times. I just wanna wake this motor up, and from what I hear from a good amount of people, either of these cams are a good bang for the buck, for stock heads. But once again thanks for the information.

Brent makes a VERY good point.

My 11.98 run was the absolute best my car will do as it sits. Weather system was PERFECT (-1150, -1200, somewhere in there). Only got a few runs that day, 12.02 was one, and 12.2 (missed shift).

With 1500 foot POSITIVE DA, and full street trim (17s all the way around, front sway on car, nitto DR out back) best i managed was 12.5 at 114ish (1.85, only 4k launch). With slicks that would have been a 12.1-12.2 pass in the bad weather.

If i add a Torque Arm, i think it will run 12.0s in ok weather, and touch high 11.8 in great weather. Just speculation. My suspension isnt really much. LCA w/bracket, panhard, and lowering springs (hurts).

Other things to consider. My car is FULL weight. 3750-3800 lbs. Not sure what weight gregs car is, but would be willing to bet hes pulled some stuff here or there. Not a knock at all, that car is smokin fast for what it is too.

You can check out my website in the signature. I have a dyno graph and video posted. With stock heads i am shifting 6700-6800 rpms.

Anything else just ask
