Cams for LT1s
Cams for LT1s
I have only been a member for a little while, but I have noticed that many people on here talk about getting LT4 Hotcams for their LT1s. My question is, WHY? There are many cams out there that will help you out a lot more than an LT4 Hotcam, for a comparable price. Just wondering.

Maybe because the LT4 Hotcam has a real name rather than XE230/236.
What I mean is I don't think people are buying it for its cam profile but rather because it has a name and they think it must be a great cam.
Not that it isn't one.
I prefer the XE series.

there are not that many options out there if you are going to use the stock heads. I use the GMlt4 cam 1) no head modification 2) don't "really" need any computer reprogramming meaning you can get away with using the stock program 3) man with with the Crane GS rr's 1.6 ratio, retainer springs, good grief you pick up 20+horse power, the power band is awesome. If you are wanting drive ability (which I am going for) you can't beat it, Its just a good cam hands down and you can't beat the price.
Not many people go out and buy just the hotcam, they buy the whole hotcam kit. I bought it for the same reasons most other people probably did:
#1) Great performance bang for the buck, can't beat the price
#2) It works very well with stock heads
#3) It's a nearly comlpete cam kit, there is no guess work for beginners as to which springs do I need to get, which retainers will work with this etc...
#4) Did I mention price?
Also, I could care less what the cam was called. If GM had just called it the "218/228" instead of giving it the marketing name "Hotcam" it would be looked at like all other similar size cams outhere like the "305". It's just that it's a proven cam package that thousands have used and has an actual name that's widely known.

i think the main reason people get the hot cam is because of emisions, its one of the easiest cam to pass emisions.
i would rather spend a grand or so and get a cam that really puts out power.
Im about to do a cam install soon, and there is no way in hell I would kit the Hot Cam. Im going with the XE 224-230 and you can run this cam with stock heads. Although they do recomend headers,exhaust,1.6 RR's, new valve springs, and no less than a 3.73 gear with the m6 and a big stall converter with an auto. This cam alone puts down about 20 more hp than the hp. I dont care about saving money on some cheesy kit. I would rather spend more money and put my own kit together with some badass parts. When everyone around the way has a hotcam, how can you outrun them having the same thing? Go bigger is the answer or just spray the **** out of em!
it was $450 shipped for 1.6RRs, the hotcam, the springs, locks, retainers, what not.
cheap and easy.
why, should I be like every other guy here? "duh i'm going to put a cc306 on my stock heads car and run it without programming".
I care about how my car drives, smog, mileage, sound, etc. There are many other people here who are doing cams for reasons other than bragging about hp/dyno numbers.

The Hotcam makes decent power and from what I heard is really easy to tune. I just dont want to be like everyone else out there. I dont jump on "bandwagons". Thats why I have made my mind up to get the Crower 562. Its an awesome cam in my opinion and you hardly ever hear about people using it. I"m even thinking of putting a cowl hood on my TA. How often do you see that. Too many Ram-Airs running around.

)anywya, i just want to add.. a lot of people here have the hotcam, not because they're "dumb lemmings", but because the hotcam is a good all-around cam for a good price.

Crower... Interesting choice. I was looking at the 562 also but I haven't heard of anyone passing California smog with it. So, that is why I moved away from that cam. Let me know how it is

I'm not evaluating your cam choice by any means. Too many people try to b original only to end up with a less that optimal cam choice.
The guy doing the Xe 236/242 on the stock bottom end is the FIRST to come to mind because we have been discussing it quite a bit in advanced tech-
But hes DEFINATLY not the only one so brian- dont take this as a personal attack
Someone did a "custom ground" cam to be different a while ago. weirdest cam I ever saw and he responded with the results.
another guy added 1* on intake and called it custom to be different.
