Most cam manufacturers have comprehensive explanations/tutorials of cam numbers on their websites.

Cam choice is going to be governed by your goals and other supporting mods.

You've got quite a bit to learn. I'd take some serious time doing a search on this forum (and also others). There is a wealth of information out there that no one can fully post in one thread.

I'll probably get in trouble posting to another forum, but this is a good start:

Good luck!

I'm sure you will get many responses to the question , be clear on your goal of what you want the car to do (how much drag and how much street). Streetability is defined by the driver so how fast do you want to go and what will it take to get you there. LF

You could build a "strip" car that is barely driveable on the street, a "street" car that is slow at the track, or a 50/50 mix of both.

How often do you go to the track? Does your street driving include anything other than straight line, like aggressive driving through corners, mountain roads?

How far do you plan to take it? A good cam choice for stock heads may not be the best choice when you decide to go to ported stock or aftermarket heads?

What kind of HP are you looking for?
