camaro's with cast iron heads?

I have a buddy at work that bought a 96 Z28 and he said that it has cast iron heads. I got a chance to look at it and sure enough it does. I thought that all camaro's had aluminum heads? I told him that somebody probably put those heads on there or put a impala motor in it. How can we tell if it is a impala motor? Maybe some of you LT1 gures can chime in on this one.

thanks
Josh

How are you sure they are cast iron? Stick a magnet to them or pull the valve cover?

It sounds like either the engine was swapped or the heads. I believe the Impala's still had the aluminum heads, it was the Caprice and Roadmaster LT1s that were equipped with cast iron heads.

Nope. The Impalla came with the iron heads.

Get a flashlight and a mirror and check the casting number on the back of the block. And hope it doesn't say 4.3L on it.

Yup, I have seen that one before... Guy decides to sell the car, but it has a newer built motor in it, so he decides to sell the motor seperate and doesn't want to spend anything to get the car driveable, so he throws a 4.3l caprice motor in it (also known as the 'baby LT1', smaller bore, different heads, etc) for cheap...

If that is the case, your buddy has some decision making to do, as in, did he buy it from a dealer or private party? If it is from a dealer he can get his cash back in all cases if it was not disclosed that the motor was a 4.3l...

In case of a private party, he may also have a case for the same, but he would probably have to take the party to court to get resolution, as it was intentionally mis-represented...
