Cam too big??

I'm looking at this cam for my engine...but I'm afraid it might be too big for my car. My car is basically just a bolt on car (stock displacement) with LT headers and stock heads. I do have a 3200 stall that is not installed in the car yet.

579/576 lift with 1.6 rockers
236/242 OR 230/236 @ .050
108+4 LSA

I'm really looking for a rough idle until I can get around to getting a great set of heads on the car...BUT I still want the car to be streetable.

Yeah, that first one is gonna be much too big without ported heads, especially for the street. Search around this forum for recommended cams for the street with some lopey idle. Comp cams 305 and 503 are good places to start. Don't really need a custom cam until you have more mods. Good luck, the search button is your friend.

There is no such thing as a cam that is "too big" - only not enough motor..

Now that I'm done being a smart a$$:

I would stay closer to a Hotcam or CC306. I have a Hotcam and it has a definite lope at idle yet is completly streetable. Really woke the car-up.

Re: Cam too big??

Well, I already have the CC503 and not real happy with the sound of it right now...guess I'll just have to wait on the 383 to get the idle I want!

No, that cam isn't to big but It's definately a big one. There are plenty of guys running cams that big. Someone posted its to big for unported heads but you usually make up for unported heads with a larger cam. Also just a cam isn't going to cut it. You are going to end up putting a lot of money into the car on parts to compliment the cam. Like lifters, pushrods, RR's, timing chain, maybe electric waterpump, TB, 36# inj I think you would run, tune, gaskets, head bolts etc. If I were you I would look into getting a custom cam made for your setup. Maybe contact Joe Overton for a cam or see how reasonable Lloyd Elliots head/cam packages are. Maybe it will be in your price range. But i would say the cam isn't "to" big but guys will run anything out there and many are. You should try to get in touch with some of these guys running that cam or a cam close to that size. -Matt

Yeah, I think this cam isn't going to be what I really need right now. And Lloyd is the guy I'm going with for sure...it's just the lead time that's killing me. I guess I'm just gonna have to suck it up and deal with it...
