Cam Swap question..

I plan on swaping the cam out in my car since the people that put it in ****ed it up and its making a problem.

To just remove the cam do i have to remove all the same stuff that i would be if i was changing out the springs and rockers to and why does it say to loosen the oil pan on shoebox's write-up?

Also why do you have to remove the intake to get the cam out? Can't you just loosen the rockers and rods since that is what is holding it in place?

Lastly, Should i replace it with the exact same cam with the exact same specs ect? Thinking it might cause bearing failure if it isn't replaced with the same thing although the engine doesn't have over 25k miles on it yet.

Re: Cam Swap question..

What is the problem?

Loosen the rockers. Remove the pushrods. Remove the intake in order to take out the lifters. Loosening the oil pan makes it easier to remove/install the timing chain cover. I didn't loosen the pan and it was a pita to install.

If your not happy with the cam choice now's a good time to replace it. With low miles it would not hurt to put in a different cam.

It's allot of work, and a good amount of time and money. You can't cut corners.

Make sure you allow for all the gaskets, lube, oil changes, RTV, etc. That's usually where people don't plan to spend as much money as they do. I also had to buy extra tools and even make some new ones since the LT1 is a breed all its own.

You drop the front of the pan, because it goes on before the timing cover does. You cannot remove the cam with the lifters in and you must remove the intake to remove the lifters. Basically, you do everything that is in the write-up, though I know you like to do everything your own way.

A different cam is not going to make any difference with the bearings.

Re: Cam Swap question..

The area I spent the most money on, was unforseen things like specialty tools, sensors I found that needed to be replaced. And LT1 gaskets that I could only find at the dealer. OIL PAN gasket, sensor, definite.
