Cam swap question
Cam swap question
I'm going to be installing an aftermarket camshaft into my 96 SS. The motor is stock. My question is: Is it OK to use the rest of my factory valvetrain with the new cam? I will probably be upgrading to 1.6 roller rockers when I have some extra money, but for now, it will be the cam and possibly some head work I will get done by a friend. Any input will be very helpful.
Thanks.
Thanks.
Re: Cam swap question
You'll need stronger valve springs, but you can reuse the rest of the valvetrain if you want. I would recommend fresh lifters, but if you absolutely have to, you can reuse the stock ones. Don't do anything without better valve springs
Re: Cam swap question
As Spinner said, you will need to install a set of springs that are appropriate to your new cam. This may necessitate new locks and retainers, depedning on what springs are chosen. New springs, if they have a larger OD than the stockers, may require new valve seats. The stock rockers may not be usable with your new cam. The "slot" in them is may be too short for a high lift cam. Unless they are damaged or worn, you can certainly reuse your OEM lifters.
There is some more to it, but that should get you started.
