Its not a bright idea especially when you have the stuff that he has.

Re: cam swap problems

I wanted an electric water pump, so I went with a better timing chain. Thats not your problem though.

I say check rockers first, thats been my problem everytime I have swapped cams. Or it will start, pop a few times, then die. If you are using stock lifters I don't even bother with a special adjustment. I hand tighten all the locks, then turn the motor over a couple of bumps and hand tighten again. Then set them with it running.

theres probably a reason why it broke.

anyway i bet 95% of the head cam cars on this board are running stock timing chains.

hell im running a stock on my 420rwhp head cam and it see's 6500+ all the time.
i've went from the hot cam 50k miles, to the 306 80k to my current cam, 93k and no issue what so ever.

I think you're wrong most people are smart enough to upgrade their chain. A lot of people are running LT4 ED's or Cloyes double rolllers. I'd say over 50% of the guys here are running aftermarket it chains. You guys can do what you want but i wouldn't be risking my trick flow heads because of a stock chain.

Re: cam swap problems

The stock chain isn't even a chain...

Mine was so loose that we could almost pull the damn thing off, and that was with boltons/spray turning no more than 5800 RPMs.

Re: cam swap problems

The opti can be installed wrong. My car would start but barely ran after cam install. My mechanic pulled and reinstalled the opti and it started right up and ran fine.

Re: cam swap problems

...check your rockers..they might of came lose..today a week after i did it..i had to go back in and retighten them all..i didnt tighten the poly locks tight enough..i gave them a little tug. Now they are on there..but 3 rockers on the passenger side were lose..one of them was just about off..and 4 were loose on the driver side..now that I re lashed them...the car runs 10 times better. But I knew something was wrong..cuz at idle it didnt sound right....you could actually hear the valve not opening...

Re: cam swap problems

I guarantee you the opti is on wrong. I put mine on wrong. The people who say this is not possible are wrong! I think it depends on the length of your cam dowel. If you dowel is not as long, it can slip in to the other slots in the opti.

My car would not crank, some small pops. Pulled the opti and saw where the dowel had made a mark about 15 degrees off the correct hole. PUt it on correctly and fired right up.

I just put in a new cam, and I test fired it before I put the water pump on just to see if it woudl fire up.

Thats what i always do too. I put my opti on wrong during my motor install and spent half the day looking for the problem. Now when i have the opti off i install it and start the car first to make sure it runs before i slap it all back together.
