CAM swap need advice
CAM swap need advice
I'm considering a CC503 cam to compliment the Trickflow Genx185 heads that I'm putting on my LT1.

I haven't decided if I'm going to stay 350/355 or step it up and go 383. I've heard that some 383 combos will hit some cams and that I should be considering a small base circle cam. I'm pretty green with the internals and am relying on advice and friends for help.
Anyone with some advice?
Thanks.

Re: CAM swap need advice
He is only asking about the 503 cam. Since he doesn't know if he will eventually go for a 383, rather than a 355, would the cam be compatible with the 383, with respect to interference with a standard base circle dimension? I don't think he was suggesting that he will build and balance a 383 at home in his spare time. He just wants to know - will the 503 present a problem if he opts for a 383 (now or in the future), with respect the cam base circle and interference. I don't think it will be a problem, but in all honesty, I don't know.
Personally, I think he needs to reflect not only on the dimensional issues, but also on the suitability of the 503 to a 383. It will produce a more tractable result in a 383, more docile and milder street manners. Is that what he wants? What might be borderline aggressive in a 355 will not feel the same with the larger displacement.
The next question I would raise would be the selection of the Trick Flow GenX 185cc heads. These will cost about $1,600 for the pair assembled, and should be compared to for example, the LE1 ported stock LT1 heads ($900 heads alone, $1,200 with a matched cam) or the higher flowing AI CNC 190cc LT1's ($1,400 heads alone, $1,795 heads and matched cam). There's a lot to be said for porting the stockers.

Re: CAM swap need advice
sorry about the vague details. I was just wanting to know if I ordered a cam and changed my mind on what I was doing if I had to get another cam. I thought if I was smart I'd order a cam that was compatible with both scenarios.
As for what I have.. currently it's a stock LT1 with crane 1.6:1 roller rockers and headers. Al heads.. nothing special. It's a higher milege about 110,000mi but works great no issues.
I've already bought the Trickflow 185 heads, unused. had them for a couple years now.
Also picked up a LE ported stock intake
58mm (BBK I think) TB (used)
As for the building of the engine, I want to learn. You don't learn without making mistakes. I have friends that can help but it's something I want to do so I can say that I did it. If I blow it up then I blow it up. I'll figure out why and do it again. Will I do it in a weekend? Not a chance but I won't learn if I don't try. Where's the fun in working on your car if you just hire someone to do it all?
As for the effect of the 503 cam in a 350/5 vs 383, yes I did know it would tame it down a bit and honestly I'd rather that. It's a street car, it doesn't need to sound like it's going to stall idling at every set of lights. I was listening to youtube audio clips and the 503 in a 350LT1 still sounded acceptable for me.
