Cam rusting?

Cam rusting?
I have had my CC306 cam under my bed for 2 weeks now and I pulled it out to look at it and there is rust forming on the first part of the cam and where the dowel pin is. This wouldnt concern me except for the fact that its on the surface where the bearing will be touching and would hurt the bearing.
What is the best way to safely remove the rust? WD-40 and a towel?

spray it down with WD-40 then put it in a plastic bag and seal it so no rust causing air can come in and get to it.
