Cam question....

ok, i Searched on my first question with no success...

want to cam my 94 T/A... but i have a question...

Is there room to do the Cam install IN the car? and if so im taking it that the condensor needs to be removed?

also, what would be a good cam choice.... its pretty much a weekend car and my main intrest is 1/4 mile racing..

oh, and if i do it in place... are the Roller rockers a big upgrade? and what would be the best place for the cam and rocker combo... any sponsoring sites sell them for a good price?

Thanks

JOe

Re: Cam question....

that's a pretty vague explaination of what you want

cam only will be pretty hard to get good results since the stock heads will hold you back alot.

i suggest looking at the Lloyd Elliot stuff...his heads/cam sets are really setting the stage for LT1 performance.

and yes the rockers are worth it

Re: Cam question....

i guess it is pretty vauge...

if i had to explain more i am really looking for more high end pull... i dont know if its all 4th gens, but my butt dyno feels pretty week from the 4,500+ range... feels like empty rpm's...

the heads im sure are gonna be out of reach for a little while... maybe i should just save and do it all at once... hmm....

well, about question 1... can the cam swap be done with the motor in car?

Re: Cam question....

yes you can do the install in the car. i took my radiator and condensor out and it really wasnt that bad.

on to what cam. it really depends on what kind of power you are looking for and how many other supporting mods you have in mind. if you want to go with something you can drop in and get a marginal power gain and have that nice lope, the comp cc502 or 503 are common, i have the 503, it has a noticable lope at idle, i am happy with the results and you dont have to do that much to the car for good results. the comp cc 306 is another really common choice, just remember the bigger the cam you go, the more you will have to do to the car to handle it. great big cam = heads+headers+stall or better clutch+gears/rear end+suspension mods+better tires etc. people are really taking a liking to the lloyd elliot stuff. he makes really nice matched head cam combos to make just about whatever hp you want

You need to make a sig with your vehicle's information and modifications. We then can help you much easier.

Re: Cam question....

I highly recommend the 503 too. It works great with stock heads and makes great power. Do all the bolt-ons with it and tuning and you will be flying. The stock heads yea will hold you back if you try to make them do more than they were meant to but you can still go pretty fast without expensive headwork for now. Just get the recommended springs; I use 612's from combination engineering and you're good to go. I changed my studs to 7/16, and added guideplates with hardened pushrods and Blue Racer 1.6 rollers. It all fits under the stock valve covers .

The LT1's use self-aligning rockers. The guideplates allowed me to use some conventional style rockers I had laying around. They are needed when you use non self-aligning rockers. They keep the pushrods in line which keeps the rocker in line. Here is a picture of a guideplate installed. The studs bolt down through the plates.

Hardened pushrods are necessary so that the guideplates don't whittle the rod into a toothpick. Higher spring pressures also require stronger pushrods although I'm not running extreme pressures. Let's just call it insurance.

There are no power gains/losses from one to the other. Again, I just wanted to use some older style rockers.

These are the rockers I'm using from Jeg's:
