cam question

ok first off i want to appologize for this redundant question.

My friend has a 97 WS6 6 speed, and were gonna cam it. Its basically stock, with the exception of the exhaust and it has no cats. Were going to be using some LT headers, but for now the rest will be basically stock. Driving will be mostly street with some track time, and a little playing on the street. SO, what cam should we use? Im just not really sure what cam the LT1 motors like or dont like. Also if you can send me links, it would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Re: cam question

I personaly am going with the LT4 hotcam kit. I got it from summitracing for 500 bucks. That cam will be good for a DailyDriver IMO.

the reason hes not doing that is because its not much bigger than stock IMO. changing from a .447/.459 to a .492/.492 doesnt seem worth it. You only achieve the .525/.525 they advertise WITH the 1.6 rocker arms

Lift is not the total answer,ya need to look at the duration and ICL.
Do a little research on cams and ya will feel better about making a selection or ask a(several) cam manufacturer about their recommendation..

Since you're in Amarillo look up roadtrip120 and Kryckter on the boards here they are both local LT1 guys to you and ask them their opinion.

Who cares about .492/.492, the HOTcam kit comes with the 1.6 ratio rockers Lift is lift.

.525 is enough lift for any street engine unless ya want to go real radical with a SR.
Again lift ain't everything.Your heads probably don't flow much past there.

Re: cam question

imho you're putting too much worry on lift. worry about the duration and overlap that the camshaft has and get that fitted to what you want to do. the duration and overlap will be the defining factors to the way the car will behave and what rpms it will like (idle lope, drivability, etc). after you get that squared away start looking at lift figures but remember when you look at lift you have to consinder what springs you intend to run with it. the more radical the lobe you run is the more expensive things are going to get spring pushrod and rocker wise and the more likely you're going to end up with a failure or have more frequent spring replacement etc. the valvetrain is a complicated place to dive into. if you'd give out some more info about the car as far as gearing tire diameter desired rpm range, and even a budget.. you'll get a lot more help.

The hot cam is quite a bit more cam than stock. I believe the stock cam has around 200 deg. int. duration @ .050 and the hot cam has 218 deg. int. / 228 exh. You get a lot of quality and reliable matched components for low $$$, I paid $500 for the kit, cam, 1.6 rockers, springs, retainers and keepers. The performance increase is noticable with a much stronger mid-range and top end power...mine will pull to about 6200. The driveability is good with some slight cam surge at very low rpm in my M6 '94. I am pleased with this cam, my car is stock otherwise except shorty headers and a PCMFORLESS tune. Good luck helping your friend with this project

gear as of now is stock 3.42s and until the rear end gives out hes staying with them, tires i couldnt tell you diameter, they are 275/45(?)/R17s, rpm range were shooting for will be somethin like 2000-6000ish but thats not something that were 100% set on. budget is whatever its going to cost. Hes working now and plans on working though his senior year and until he leaves for college the next year.

How much are you paying to get it installed?
