Question Cam Noob Needs Help

Hi,
i was reading the thread on the for sale section for group advertisers
here and had some questions.

Please excuse the lack of knowledge i have as i am still learing about cars.

First off i was looking at the selection of cams out there, . I am unsure of which to get. I am looking for a cam that would yeild the most power but also be able to pass CA smog. i have heard the the CC305 and the lt4 hotcam are these types. I also have heard that there are cams that are a combination of the cc305 and the cc306 that yeild the most power, have good streetability and can still pass smog. If any other cams come to mind please let me know. I want one that has good gains over stock. can pass CA smog. and has good streetability. i also plan to purchase nitrous soon, i dont know if that would make a diffrence to the cam i got.
I was also wondering what else is needed for a cam install. the cam kit that is in the for sale section comes with the following:

Comp Cams Custom Ground LT1 Camshaft
Comp Cams Pro-Magnum Rocker Arms (your choice, self aligning or non-self aligning)
EX Components 611 or 612 Valve Srings (fit stock head with NO machining)
EX Components 138 Ultra Light Weight Chromoly Retainers
EX Components 391 Hardened Valve Locks
EX Components 720H Hardened Pushrods
EX Components 516 Guideplates (if you choose non-self aligning rockers)

is that all i will need for a cam install or do i need to buy something else?

if i decided just to buy the cam alone for now would i be able to install it or would i need something else to buy the whole kit?

Also i know there will be the need for some computer tuning afterwords, who do you guys recomend to do that? I was also wondering how hard the instalation is and if you beleive it can be done at home (without a mechanic). I plan on changing my optispark, and waterpump and decided to go with a cam while im at it.

I also noticed the cam kit comes with rocker arms and i have the choice between self aligning or non self aligning, what the diffrence and which is better?

lastly are there any good tech guides or books out there that you would recomend me getting before the instalation? how long do you think the opti, cam, and pump will take to install?

sorry for the long topic
i appreiciate all your help
thanks again
Brian

That is pretty much all you would need for a cam swap, except a timing cover gasket. The CC305 ground on a 114 LSA would get my vote for a good emissions legal cam. If you have no experience, you should find someone local off the board who can help you through it.

Stock rockers are self-aligning, meaning the rockers themselves control pushrod side-to-side movement. Non self-aligning use guideplates to control that movement. If you buy self-aligning, that will be the easiest ones to bolt-on. Installation time varies greatly, based on experience, tools available, and snags that happen while in the middle of it all.

If you can't find a local shop to dyno tune your car, the only other option is a mail order tune. I believe there are a couple of board sponsers who can do this. While I am not a big fan of mail order tunes, I do feel they are way better than making no attempt at all.
