cam for a non vented opti

searched for an answer and didnt find one, so dont flame me!! I was searching online for a cam on summitracing and i was looking at cmp cams 268xfi. so i called up summit to ask them for a cam with the shorter dowel pin for my cam and they told me that the cam will work in both vented and non-vented opti spark. I thought that each has its own camshaft, little confused and need so help.

thanks

Yeah, they don't know what they're talking about. Just tell them you need it for a 94, or call comp directly and get it from them. If it's too long, it's not hard to grind it down a bit for the non-vented opti.

They are right (essentially). You just have to make sure on your own that the dowel pin is the correct length for your application. Everyone should do this when putting a cam in.

The advice was not incorrect. You just have to adjust the dowel pin length.... not real hard to do.

A non-vented Opti will work with either cam. The drive shaft for a non-vented Opti rests in the cam sprocket, not in the nose of the cam. A vented Opti will only work with a cam that has the larger pilot hole for the Opti shaft. That's because although the vented Opti is driven by the longer dowel pin, it still has a "shaft" and the shaft fits into the pilot hole in the end of the cam.
