Cam installed wrong?

If my cam was installed wrong, such as a tooth off, would it cause my car to not idle, rev slow, and run rich (if it is retarded). I have been having all kinds of problems with the car and have pretty much limited it down to a bad computer or cam installed wrong. Let me know.

Your car will not run right with a tooth off. It will backfire like crazy. Also did you make sure you installed the opti correctly?

I was at his house when it was running and his car is back firing like crazy, espically down low in the rpms. When it is revved higher (3k+ I think), it smoothes out and sounds better with hardly and back firing. Does that sound like the cam being off a tooth?

not sure about the tooth off theory. i know that if your opti is indexed improperly the car will not run right. i would check the opti first, then pull the timing chain cover.

In my opinion, you have over-cammed your car..unless you have ported heads which isn't on your sig..

That will not make you car act the way you described it. Something else is going on here....check your firing order while you're in there (if you pulled the plug wires off for some reason). The opti is something to check too.....did it fully seat on the dowels?

I have ported and polished heads in my car. I am also have a vaccum leak somewhere that we cannot track down. Alvin at pcmforless thinks the vaccum leak is the cause of my problems and what he is saying makes sense now that I have talked to him. He says at idle I should have 50-60 kPa and right now according to datamaster I am getting no less than 80 kPa. He says I am getting almost double the fuel dumped into the motor, causing the symytoms I have describedl. What do you guys think?

As for opti it went right on didnt have to force oit or anything. I also lined up the keyway in the piece that goes into the cam.

That sounds like exactly what he told me, I still cant track it down. Are you still using the stock injectors? Are you getting any codes?

I thought it was my pcm4less programming so I put back the stock 22#'s and removed the chip, and it ran a little better, but way overly rich.

Look under your valvecovers, does it smell like gas? I originally thought it was my fuel pressure regulator (stock), bought a new one but i have been able to try it as of yet.

I know it runs rich because I had to fill up 3 times on the first week-end after the car woke up again.

You can cheat the car, if it is not idling by adjusting the stop screw in the TB or just by bending the bracket a little. The problem is that you are dumping so much fuel and not enough air at start-up. That is why it only turns on as you floor the gas pedal. This is a band-aid fix.

There was a guy on the board a while back that had the cam gear off a tooth. I think his symptoms were similar. He fixed it by pulling the timing cover back off and redoing it. Try a search.
