cam help/parts list needed.

Okay I dont know too much about cams, I figured I will let people know so thye can explain/help me pic the parts i need.

I have a 355LT1 in my 87 Iroc.

Mods consist of

Ported stock head and intake
52mm TB
30# injectors
LT4 Hotcam
1.6RRs
1 5/8 hooker headers
3000 Stall
3.42s but may go to 3.73s.

I plan on doing the GM847 cam in my car. I have read a bit about this cam and have decided thats they way I want to go. I wi be doing more mods as money comes in.

Now what are all the parts I need for this cam install.

I was gonna go with Comp 918 springs and CCA-774-16 retainers

What else do I need?

Thanks a bunch

Jay

There have been a few reports about problems with the 918's lately so you may want to consider PAC 1218's or 1518's.
I belive herron Performance is running a special on them currently aswell.

Which Opti does the engine have? (vented/novented)
Have you done any major engine work before?

Not sure on the opti it is a 95 motor with a new opti in it. I have done alot of engine work before such as a couple motor swaps etc but never really any valvetrain stuff. My buddy whom is building his 99SS is gonna help with the install since he has done it before.

Basically when it comes to valve train im a noob lol...I know the parts just dont know what combo's to use.

Thanks a bunch

Also with those pac 1218s which retainers would i use?

I dont know if anything from my lt4 hotcam setup is usable for this?

you'll need new gaskets/seals for everything in the front of your motor, hardened pushrods, guide plates, cam (checking the proper dowel pin length), I would recommend arp screw in studs that match your rr's for your heads, afore mentioned springs/locks/retainers....if you remove the heads you might be looking at a mill job and definately new head gaskets....oh, and possibly new lifters depending...last but not least a new timing chain.

The PAC1218's are the same as the old 918's. Comp Cams switch their supplier and the new supplier has had some questionable quality.

You can reuse your 1.6RR that cam with the hot cam, and if you do you wont need to use guide plates. You should get a cam degree kit and check the pushrod legnth when installing new valvetrain components aswell.

On a 95' motor you have the vented Opti which allows you more choice for timing sets, which should be replaced when installing a cam. Belive it or not Autozone has the best prices on Cloyes timing parts that I can find. I would lookup the correct part number for the parts you want then goto Autozoo and tell them I need this part number.

You can use the same parts it takes to install a 26918 spring when you are using the PAC 1218 springs, which is really all you need.

http://www.pacracing.com/Beehive_Spr...Set_of_16.html

PAC has them for $184 a set but dealers usually sell them for less per set because we buy them in larger quantites.

The retainers and locks you get depend on the rockers as well, with the self aligning rockers you can have issues if you use the wrong stuff.

As for the Cloyes kit that's only if you are dropping the stock water pump, if you are going to a electric water pump the most accurate timing chains I have found are from Pro Gear 99.9% of the time the are dead nuts accurate. Can't say that about other sets I have used.

As Mike said above check the pushrod length and degree the cam to make sure it's installed properly.
