Question cam dowel pin too long?

I did a search but would like to get one more opionion on the length. The pin in my 306 is 7/8 (sorry, tape measure is all i got) and the stocker is 5/8, . Can the pin be just hammered in or is it bottomed out already?

7/8???........wow, I hope no one has used it like that. Just tap it in carefully to .620" a tad bit less than 5/8.

maybe you could try grinding it? i dunno, but the cam i bought off someone, the pin looked like it was grinded, and was too short for my car, so i yanked it out a bit. maybe you could try tapping it in a bit as well. or maybe the best solution would be to buy a new pin (for myself as well, cause i dont know if what i did is ok or not?) this didnt help, did it?

You won't know until you try.

If it won't go, then it is time to reduce it's length by removing some metal.

When I tried to tap in my pin for my hotcam it didn't want to budge. I just used a dremel and ground it down to correct length.

Copied this directly from the GM performance parts catalog:
Technical Notes: The LT4 camshaft P/N 24502586 was designed to be used in a number of different engines. Therefore, the following change may need to be made to allow for correct assembly of the engine: For LT1 and L98 engines 1995 and before, the dowel pin in the end of the camshaft must be pushed in so extension from end of cam is .30+/-.01", the same as the production part. For 1996 LT1 and LT4 engines, the dowel pin is in the correct position, extending .620" from the end of the camshaft. This camshaft has a fuel pump lobe. _

My CC306 had a hole all the way through for the dowel, meaning you could push it all the way out the otherside.

My hotcam had the hole filled at the bottom, so thats prolly why you had to shave some off.

Be careful tapping it in though, I have heard of the pin splintering if it gets hard to move. Mine tapped in very easily.

That should be LT1s "1994 and before", since the 1995s got the vented opti and need the longer dowel length.

Well, I was able to pull the dowel pin out - it's about 1.1875"... I can set it up to be .620 out, but it still can be pushed in very easily.. To about .450 or so.. I've tried to "knurl" it a little bit, and that seems to be helping. Maybe I can just set it @ .620 out w/ JB weld and call it done? What method have you other peop's used? Are the 96 and newer dowel pins like 1.5" long or what?
