cam clearance, have some questions!!!

i have a 383 stroker, and most of the motor is disassembled so i decided to go with a larger cam then what i am running right now. it is the xf1 292, if you dont know the cam the specs are 242/248 584/579. will i have an issues with cam clearance. how would i be able to tell if i do have a clearance issue? ANother question is how streetable is this cam, i know its not going to have much bottom end torq but i hear it makes good numbers.

thanks

Only one way to know for sure. Assemble the engine and rotate it and CHECK.

I use a tie wrap that is about .060 and I use it like a feeler gauge to go between the rods & cam and rods & block to check the clearance

I'm not being a ***, but I can't tell you if you will have a problem or not without knowing what connecting rods you are running. I guess there is no need to answer that now though. Otherwise, turn the motor over and listen to hear something or it just stops spinning all together. Good Luck.

Thumbs up

The lobes on your new cam are not really any taller so if you already had good cam to rod clearance on your 383 you should still have it on this cam as well. The base circle must be ground lower for more lift but the lobes can only be so tall since the cam has to go through the cam bearings. The Eagle H-Beams have very good clearance at 3.750 stroke and 2.100 normal journal size but many I-Beams will hit and need to be ground. I do 4.000 stroke LT1 engine's and can still use any cam I want with no reduced base circles needed. Like Bret said it is in the rods and how they are made or modified.

You should be fine then although double checking is never bad. I have gotten two sets of "fake" Eagle rods and some of the other like SCAT's H-Beams are bigger up there and do hit earlier.
